The renovation of Austin Peay State University’s Kimbrough Building for the College of Business came approximately forty years after RJA designed the original facility. While the original building reflected forward-thinking sustainable design for its time, the college sought a renewed environment that would better support its evolving program and reflect its continued growth. Working closely with the Dean’s vision, the renovation introduced a clean, modern aesthetic aligned with the College of Business’s upward trajectory.
A new lobby addition was designed to serve two important purposes: creating an informal student study space and providing an accessible interior connection to the lower level of the adjacent lecture hall. Classrooms throughout the building were updated as collaborative, flexible learning environments with integrated lighting and technology. A smaller classroom was reimagined as a learning board room for use by both students and staff, while the lecture hall was fully renovated with new finishes, lighting, technology, and acoustical treatments. The project also introduced a larger Student Success Center tailored to the specific needs of the College of Business.
Additional improvements included accessible restroom renovations with a distinctive design character, updates to multiple office suites, and the conversion of a small classroom into the Dean’s Suite. Together, these improvements transformed Kimbrough into a more connected, contemporary, and student-centered academic environment that supports the college’s mission while building on the legacy of the original facility.
